Albert Johnson Jr. was born August 27, 1925, in Ft. Madison, Iowa to Albert Nelson and Helen Violet (Avis) Johnson. He passed away at the age of 90, Friday, May 13, 2016, in his home at Calvin Manor in Des Moines.

Albert graduated from Ft. Madison High School in 1943, then spent several years working for the Santa Fe Railroad. He began studies at the University of Iowa, interrupted by service in the U.S. Army from 1947-1949, which included duty in the Panama Canal Zone, and in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1951, graduating from U. of I. in June 1953. He soon began his career employment with Iowa Workforce Development, retiring in August 1995.

Albert was an avid Hawkeye fan and a coin and stamp collector. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to yearly conventions of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security. He was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion, and Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his cousins, Kenneth Johnson (Judy) and Velna Bruegger.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lila May (Gilman) Johnson, whom he married in August of 1966.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home (605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.) A Graveside Committal Service with military honors will take place at Masonic Cemetery (1550 48th Street, Des Moines) at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 19, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309, in Albert’s memory.
