Anita Luella Mirr Kane, 82, passed away May 13, 2016 following a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 18, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA and the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 19 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1230 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines. Private burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.

Anita was born October 24, 1933 in Lindsay, NE to Leo S. and Adeline (Beller) Mirr and was one of ten children. She was raised in Rock Island, IL and graduated from Alleman Catholic High School at the top of her class. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper in Des Moines prior to her marriage to James J. Kane on August 29, 1964 at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Anita was a devoted wife and homemaker.

Also a woman of many interests and talents. Anita loved to read, including multiple newspapers per day, and frequented the library with her children. She knitted Christmas booties every year until arthritis ravaged her hands. She was a great cook and loved to bake as well. For her garden her peonies and homegrown tomatoes were her pride and joy. Listening to music and dancing with Jim was a favorite pastime in her younger years as well as golfing. Anita worked crossword puzzles every day of her life up until the last few weeks. She was an avid Wheel of Fortune fan and normally guessed the puzzle before the contestants. A prolific card writer, Anita rarely forgot a birthday or anniversary.

Anita was Ward Chairman of the American Cancer Society in the 1970’s, PTA at Clive Elementary and contributor to many bake sales for church and school.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Jim; son, Sean; and daughter, Kelly; her siblings, Marvin Mirr, Dale (Lana) Mirr, Janet Robinson, Carol (Don) Hoover, and Betty Dies; and over 65 nieces and nephews. Anita was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Ilene Kennedy, Ivan Mirr, Mardella (Mardi) Conover and Kathleen Manion.
