Shawn Stone
Des Moines

Shawn Stone, 51, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family that loved him on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at his home in Des Moines. Shawn was born October 23, 1964 in Des Moines. He was the youngest of three born to Larry and Mary Stone.

Shawn was a very caring, compassionate, kind and such a gentle person. He was extraordinarily witty making him one of the best story tellers you would ever get to listen to. One of his friends said, "I've been blessed to have known a lot of truly outstanding, profoundly hilarious people in my life. Shawn was the funniest....." He could put a smile on your face with his sincere kindness or have you belly laughing from one of his crazy, and usually true, stories. He was so loved and so care for by so many and those that were fortunate enough to know him will always hold him in there memory and dear in their heart. Shawn loved his children with all of his heart, and his heart was pure and honest. He was loved and admired for his kind and humble qualities, so much so, there are two family members named after him.

He was so smart, he had a brilliant mind and a thirst for knowledge. He enjoyed reading encyclopedias and the dictionary. He was a deep and complex thinker and yet he loved and craved the simple things in life; fishing and the calmness it brought him, searching for hidden treasures with his metal detector. Having a real conversation with a good friend. Seeing the sunrise or a beautiful rainbow after a rain.

For the past 15 years Shawn worked for J&P Cycles. He loved motorcycles, he loved working on them, he built a few and he loved to ride. He was overheard telling John Parham, "I've had a lot of jobs that I've liked in my life, but I want to thank you for letting me have a career that I love!" So thank you John and Jill.

Toward the end of his battle with cancer his family lovingly called him their "Gentle Giant". He was slighter than usual because of the battle his physical body was fighting, he was still as gentle, considerate, compassionate and genuinely grateful for the love and help he was experiencing from people who loved him and from people that didn't even know him.

You fought a good fight.
We dearly love you and will miss you always!

Shawn is survived by his mother, Mary Stone; his sisters, Kelli (Gary) Jacobs and Polly (Darren) Rich; daughter, Hailey Stone (her mother, Shawn Robinson); sons, Seth and Mason Stone (their mother, Michele Stone); daughter, Bridget Berryhill; nieces, Elisha Young and Tiara Yamen; and nephew, Zachary Stone.

He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Stone; first wife, Dale Ann; and his grandparents.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15th at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 16th also at Hamilton’s, followed by interment at Chapel Hill Gardens.
