He moved to Des Moines in 1957, Minneapolis in 1975 and retired in 1985 as District Manager Westinghouse Electric Treasury Division. He moved back to Des Moines in 1988 where he renewed his membership at St. John’s Lutheran Church, continued membership at the Des Moines ZA GA ZIG Shrine, Des Moines York Rite Masonic Bodies, Ottumwa Masonic Lodge, Des Moines Amateur radio Association and enjoyed being a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Dad moved to grand Marais Minnesota in 2005 where he enjoyed the loving care of his daughters until his death of pneumonia October 31, 2007. Hugh is survived by his son Charles (Eileen); daughters Mary Ashley (Dan), Anna and Sarah Hamilton; grandchildren Tom (Tenille), Beth, Jake Hamilton, Kary Graham, Charles Ashley, and great grand children Austen and Kathryn. I can not express in words the loss we feel and the joy of Dad’s next great adventure. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shrine’s Children’s Hospital.

Dear Charly and family
My deepest sympathy in the loss of your father. I always remembered him as a kind, witty man. Don always said he was a legend on your street (I'm thinking it was Linden Lane, same as the Burdick's). I visisted with your father back in the mid-nineties when he came to an office to recieve some diabetes education. I visisted with him and enjoyed his dry humor and wit.
I have to believe you wrote the obituary, it was beautiful. I remember your writing Charly, you had such a knack with the pen.
You will have many memories to hold you over for a lifetime. My dad has been gone 17 years and we still gather and tell his stories, and will forever.
Fondly,
Sue
