Garvin “Gil” Welch, 70, passed away on April 10, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on May 6, 1945, to Almon and Dorothy Welch.

Gil graduated from Saydel High School in 1965. He was most recently employed by Firestone as a tire manufacturer and was a member of the United Auto Workers.

Gil enjoyed golfing, playing chess, watching NASCAR races, and a good game of cribbage. He was an avid collector of items such as M&M memorabilia, chess boards, and sports cards. Gil will be lovingly remembered by his family as the DVR King who rarely missed an episode of the Young and the Restless.

Gil also enjoyed all sports and was a fan of the Celtics, Bears, and Hawkeyes. He loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and various activities.

Garvin is survived by his children, Shawna (Tracey) Mikesell and Eric (Leah) Welch; his most beloved child, Baxter; grandchildren, Jensen, Kaden, Grant, Mckenna, and Macey; siblings, Gerry Welch, Terry (Barb) Welch, Randy (Jayne) Welch, and Cindy (James) Dacus; step-children, Mike (Lisa) Pelz and Cynthia Pelz; step-grandchildren, Stephanie and Mick; and step-great grandchild, Dominic. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Sharon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with visitation Thursday evening from 5 – 8 p.m., also at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Carlisle High School Baseball Team in loving memory of Gil.
