Service Details

Scott A. “Scotty” Dawson, 59, lifelong resident of West Des Moines, Iowa passed away April 10, 2016 at Methodist Hospital. Scott attended West Des Moines Schools until his sophomore year when his teacher, Dallas Gilreath encouraged him to go to Des Moines Technical High School and study Refrigeration. After graduation in 1976 he started his apprenticeship at the Local 33 as a Refrigeration Fitter. Scott married his high school sweetheart, whom he had met at Holiday Pool, Jeanne M. Townsend. In 1979 they had their son, Zachary who followed in his father’s trade with the Local 33. During his apprenticeship Scott was employed at Cassaday Refrigeration by owner Virginia Klemm. While at Cassaday he built Casey General Stores around the Midwest. Then, in 1985 Scott joined Taylor Industries until his retirement in 2013.

Scott had a positive attitude in life. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. He enjoyed golfing (especially making a hole in one), fishing, camping, shooting pool, horseshoes and hosting parties for family and friends. His annual Memorial Day party at Easter Lake eventually moved to his “party garage” on 14th street where they lived for 24 years.

In 1993 Scott’s health began to decline, it changed his life forever. It never stopped him from doing almost anything. In 2009, Dr. Cass Franklin preformed a kidney transplant with a kidney donated by his sister-in-law, Jill K. Tompkins from Iowa City. We will be forever grateful for her generous gift. Please consider being an organ donor.

Scott will be missed by his wife of 38 years, Jeanne; son, Zachary; and granddaughter, Sophia (the apple of his eye) all of West Des Moines; sisters, Melody Todd and Sandra Stanley; brother, Jake Dawson, all of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Donald Tompkins of Iowa City; sisters-in-law, Jill Tompkins of Iowa City and Jan (James) Haley of Richardson, TX; and many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews that he adored.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Shirley Dawson; mother-in-Law, Maureen Townsend of West Des Moines; and brother-in-law, David Stanley of Des Moines.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Radia, Dr. Prem Chandron, Dr. Jobinson Thomas, and Ms. Hermien Creger for caring for Scott. Thanks to all the nurses at Methodist for the wonderful care he received.

As a teen, Scott could be seen riding his unicycle around Valley Junction while carrying sacks of groceries. He had a warm and loving smile and will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. A bench will be purchased for placement in a local park in Scott’s memory. Condolences may be expressed online at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with the visitation Thursday, April 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. and the funeral service on Friday, April 15 at 12 p.m.
