Thomas Vernon Ellis, age 75, was born December 15, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa to Mearlin and Berneice Ellis. He passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Altoona Nursing and Rehab in Altoona, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 11, also at Hamilton’s, with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Florence Ellis; children, Thomas Ellis, Jr. of Des Moines, Michael Ellis Weatherly of Florida, and Richard Ellis of Indiana; step-children, Craig Miller, Tami (Brian) Fredricks, and Melissa (Randy) Small; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Jenny Mundy of Arizona, Lucy Dawson of Kansas, Donna Livezed of Charles City, IA, Robert Ellis of Winterset, IA, and Mary Springer, Bud Legg, and Kay Huffman, all of Des Moines.
Tom worked for Brookly Pack for a long time and United Planting for a few years, but he was best known as the owner of Ellis Island, which he ran for 27 years. He was a Mason and a member of Eastgate Lodge, ZaGaZig Shrine, and IATSE Local 67 Stagehand Union. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; step-father, Luther Legg; brother, Art Ellis; and his mother and father in law.

For over 26 years you were the Love of my life through bad time and our good times. We had times when we drove each other crazy but no matter what,we, knew how much love was there . I can't see me without you in my life, I'm lost. I miss you so very much already. I LOVE YOU

Tom ( Grandpa,lol) we had many fun times from going to the capitol to looking at new furniture ( Flo you know it was fun) to just setting around the round table drinking beer and singing songs. You were in my life as long as I can remember and always treated me good and for that I thank you! Say hi to my Dad and enjoy your time with the friends who were waiting on you. RIP

So sorry for your loss. There were so many fun times at Ellis Island!!! Lexi and Madi had their first Shirley Temples there!
