Lester Choate, 72, was born February 27, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, April 5, 2016.

He met the love of his life, Judy and the two were married December 19, 1964, and have been inseparable ever since. Sonny’s greatest joy in life was being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was proud of his farm that has been in the family for over 50 years. Sonny enjoyed spending the 4th of July on the farm with the family, giving tractor and hayrack rides to the grandkids, and going four-wheeling. Sonny was always one to give great advice and there to lend a helping hand. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Judy; children, Mark (Lyn) Choate, Lou Anne “LuLu” (Tim) Sona, and Angie (Jon) Wolfkill; mother, Gladys Choate; sisters, Mary Ann Spragg and Beverly Smith; grandchildren, Jessica (Cory), Danielle, Tyler, Autumn, Nick (Meagan), Samantha (Jimmy), Katie, Cassie, Jeff, Lauren (Bill), Lacey, Brandan, Abbi, Baili; great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Kayla, Lily, Bailey, Corbin, Charlie, Rylee, Niko, Samantha, Brooke, Hailey, Kaylah, and Oliver; and a host of extended family and friends.

Sonny was preceded in death by his father, Junior Choate; grandparents; brothers-in-law, Walter Spragg and David Smith; and daughter-in-law, Linda Choate.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines.
