Clifton J. Bennett, Jr.
A dedicated Husband and Father
Clifton J. Bennett was the first of two children born on January 15, 1932, to the late Clifton and Susan Bennett. Clifton grew up in East Baltimore, but enjoyed many of his summers in Florence, South Carolina, where he hunted, fished and helped his grandfather on the farm. Growing up, Cliff always had a passion for science and nature, which put him on the path to pursue medicine as a career.
Clifton was educated in the East Baltimore school system. He graduated from Dunbar High School, and later received his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at Morgan State University. Cliff’s education was placed on hold when he was drafted in the army in 1955. After the army Clifton went back to school to become a Medical Technologist, and then pursued a career at Sinai Hospital. He still aspired to apply to medical school but was sidetracked when he met Vashti in the Medical Records Department. Clifton and Vashti later married in July of 1958. It was during their 53 years of marriage that Cliff accepted Christ.
Although Cliff liked to hunt, he was an avid fisherman and loved being on the water. Family and friends couldn’t wait until he returned to receive the days catch. But also the harvest from Cliff’s garden that he worked on at his in-laws property in Linthicum, Maryland. Cliff attended St. Peter Claver in Baltimore where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He also frequently spent time with the saints of First Baptist Church of Pimlico.
He is survived by two sons, Mark Bennett and John Bennett; daughter-in-law, May Bennett; brother-in-law, Jerome Redd; sisters-in-law, Bessie Eggleston, Alice Redd, Regina Autry Catherine Autry, Lorraine Autry, and Sadie Bennett; several god-children, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
