Theodore "Ted" Gathercole

Theodore Gathercole, 84, was born July 19, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Theodore and Gertrude Gathercole. He passed away on March 1, 2016, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, IA.

Theodore served in the United States Army where he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and working with his hands. Theodore also enjoyed traveling in his RV and taking frequent trips to the casino.

Theodore is survived by his wife, Martha Gathercole; 17 children, 32 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted Gathercole and Gertrude Harvey; twin sons, Ted and Donald Gathercole; son, Rick Wamsher; daughter, Brenda Hatfield; grandsons, Troy Gathercole, Donald Archer, and John Jackson; son-in-law, Harlan Smith; and great-grandson Evan Jackson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2016, at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue South in Mitchellville, with burial to follow at Mitchellville Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday evening at the funeral home from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary service beginning at 6:00 p.m.
