Jan Willem Post
February 27, 2016
On the afternoon of February 27, 2016, Jan passed away at A. H. Blank Golf Course in Des Moines Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday March 4, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Waveland Golf Course, 4908 University Ave. Des Moines Iowa.
Jan was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on December 28, 1956 to Henk and Gerda Post. He graduated from Des Moines Abraham Lincoln High School in 1975. He went on to receive an associate’s degree in Information Technology in 1984, and then went on to earn a Bachelor Degree in Information Technology from Bellevue, Nebraska in 1994. He worked as a Project Manager for the State of Iowa – Executive Branch. He was also a member of the Project Management Institute Central Iowa Chapter for 18 years.
In 1977, Jan married the love of his life, Monica Harper. Together they have one son, Nicholas who was born on May 29, 1992.
Jan loved to golf, and the time he spent playing the game with his son and with his friends. His friends often regarded him as the “event planner” because he always had a plan and took control of tee times, golf outings, and golf trips. Memorable trips include Augusta National, Phoenix, AZ, and places around Iowa. No matter how much ribbing he took as the “event planner”, he was always there to make the next tee time or plan the next golf get away.
Jan liked to debate politics and the current affairs of the day. The underlying tone of his discussions revealed a great deal about his character; that people mattered. Jan knew what it was like to have a job and to lose a job, and those things that can drive others crazy he always took in stride. He would reassure others by telling them, “It’s all good”.
Jan was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved to watch the Hawks play. He loved to play cards with friends and his game of choice was Texas Hold ‘em. Jan lived life to the fullest.
He is survived by his loving wife, Monica of 38 years; and his best accomplishment of all his son, Nicholas. His mother, Gerda; his sisters, Saskia, Dela, Christina, Babette; his brother, Peter; his in-laws, Bob and Jane Harper; as well as brothers-in-law, Greg Helms and Adam Weir; and sister-in-law, Nola Harper; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by his father, Henk and step-mother, Suzette; as well as brother-in-law, Tom Harper and sister-in-law, Cherie Helms.

Jan and I first met over 6 years ago at a monthly poker game through a mutual friend. Of all the new people I met at these games Jan stuck out as a person with a great mind and intellect. Whether it was politics, college sports or life in general, I could always count on Jan to offer great perspective. Jan was very proud of Nick and Monica and my thoughts are with them at this very sad time for all of us. I feel a real emptiness at this time but will try to remember what Jan would always remind me, " It's all good". Rest in Peace Brother.

Jan Post was one great guy! He hired me in 2004 to work with him on a project at the state of Iowa Medicaid Bureau, and I worked with him for about 2 years. I was happy to have maintained contact over the years since then, and enjoyed and shared many of his thoughts posted to Facebook in the last few years. I cannot believe he has passed so young, and my sincerest condolences go out to Monica and Nick, as well as all his other friends and family. Losing a guy like Jan leaves a great big hole in our world. I will keep him and all his loved ones in my heart. We miss you, Jan!

Jan and I shared Acacia and golf. I always looked forward to seeing him at our annual golf outing. I worked at AEGON and was delighted when he worked there for a while. He worked across town but we had many IM conversations. He will be missed.

I only knew Jan for the past 1 1/2 years as he worked to get CACTAS up and running for the Preservation Tax Credit. In this time he showed great leadership and a level headed strength. He had a passion for "getting it right". He took an often tedious or stressful meeting and with a smile and nod, let us all know it would get done. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, he will be missed by many.

Monica and Nick my condolences to you and all of Jan's family.
It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to someone I have known for about 35 years. Jan has been a co-worker, golfing companion, and most importantly a close friend. We have played golf in eight states together. We have shared many laughs, meals, and drinks on and off the course. I will miss you immensely. Rest in peace brother.

Monica and Nick, my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Jan has been a dear friend of mine since our Mutual of Omaha days. My golfing memories of Jan will forever be cherished. He had that gift of making everything fun. I will not forget his humor and that special laugh he had. Even though I only saw him over the past several years at the annual Boom Invitational golf tourney, it always brought back memories of our time in Omaha. I will miss him.

I first met Jan through the Central Iowa PMI organization, and then most recently, visited weekly in his current work assignment. He was always willing to draw from his experience to help with a current issue or make a suggestion. When you least expect it, he would reveal the kind, sensitive man he really was. We will surely miss his presence.
