Betty Young
February 26, 2016
Betty Young, 75, passed away on Friday, February 26, 2016, at Taylor House in Des Moines.
Betty was born on June 18, 1940 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Blanche and Herb Griep. After high school, she attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing and was a dedicated employee of Iowa Methodist Hospital and Des Moines Orthopedic Surgery Center for many years. The friendships she gained during those times added another dimension of friendship and family to her life.
Betty was married to Marshall Young on April 2, 1965. She was adored by her family, including her daughter, Michelle Harrington, and son, Mike (Stephanie) Young. Betty will be fondly remembered as an awesome grandma by Josh, Mack, Nathan, Ahren, Sam, and Frances. She is also survived by her siblings Gloria (Jim) Troutwine, Bob (Cynthia) Griep, Marge Grant, and Joanie Griep, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Her sense of family was vastly extended by her close group of friends which included co-workers, her bridge pals, neighbors, and others too numerous to mention.
Betty loved to travel, garden, play bridge, read a good mystery, listen to good music, cheer on her Hawkeyes, and cook. Most of all, she loved being a grandma!
Betty will be remembered for her hospitality, kind heart, warm smile, compassion, and helpful hand.
Please join us for a celebration of Betty’s life at Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, 12321 Hickman Road, Urbandale, Iowa, on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to Noon, followed by the celebration of life service.
Memorials can be directed to Betty’s family for donations that will be made to local charities in Betty’s honor. Condolences can be expressed online at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I first met Betty as an IMH student nurse when she worked on Younkers. Later, I was the nurse for Jack Spevak, M.D. where Michelle and Mike were patients. I always enjoyed talking to Betty. I'm sorry for your loss. May your church family at Walnut Hills be a source of comfort for you. I was a member their in the 90s.

Betty was loved by so many. She was a wonderful grandmother and it was a pleasure to see her in action over the years. I hope that the Young family can find some peace and comfort by reflecting on the wonderful memories they have of her. She was truly an amazing lady. My heart breaks for you all.
