Lorraine Harris
February 18, 2016
Lorraine Harris was born September 5, 1919 in Des Moines, Iowa to James Douglas Jones and Lottie Mae Jones. After living a full life, she departed on Thursday, February 18, 2016.
Lorraine received her education in Des Moines public schools…graduating from East High. She continued her studies in Piney Woods, Mississippi where she attended trade school.
Lorraine was a fantastic cook, and she enjoyed sharing her food with friends and family, but her specialty was baking, which included an array of fancy cakes and pies, as well as “simple” treats…poppyseed bread, popcorn balls, rice crispy treats, cookies, etc…no one could make the delicious confections like her!
Although Lorraine did not drive, that never slowed her down, she was a master at navigating the public transit system, and if the bus couldn’t get her there, or get her there fast enough, she would walk. It was amazing how fast and far she could walk.
Lorraine married Marcus Harris in 1948 and from that union Marcus Harris Jr was born and he would later bless her with three beautiful grandchildren…Marcus Martin, Marco Brown and Lasha Brown.
Lorraine worked in the Des Moines school system for many years, retiring as a teacher’s aide and “grandmother” to many children.
Lorraine was full of love, and she enjoyed making people laugh! She was the life of the party and loved a good practical joke…especially her infamous and classic “snake in a can of nuts”, tempting all who sat in her living room awaiting her delicious goodies.
Lorraine loved the Lord and was a lifetime member of Corinthian Baptist Church, just like her Mother Lottie Mae, and served on the Mother’s Board. She was well liked and had a host of friends!
Lorraine is survived by her son Marcus Harris, siblings: Delores Young and Delbert Jones, three grandchildren: Marcus Martin, Lasha Brown and Marco Brown, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Battling Alzheimer’s, toward the end of her life, Lorraine would often say she wanted to "Go Home", well, she is now with God, her parents and all of her siblings who have ascended into heaven before her: Clementine Jones, Geraldine Draffen, Hubert Jones, Eujetta Fisher, Goldie Flipping and Nellie Morrow.
Lorraine, we salute you for a life lived honorably! Your love, faith, smile, laughter and delicious confections will be greatly missed! Thank you for being a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother and great-grandmother! We all love you immensely!
Please send condolences to Delbert Jones...1512 Guthrie Ave. Des Moines, Iowa 50316.

Dear family, we love you, miss you and you have our deepest sympathy.
Aunt Lorraine was the quintessential aunt. She loved children, her son, her grandchildren and her nieces and nephews. Her lemon, poppy seed bread and her popcorn balls were the best. After I moved to New York, she would fed ex me her delicious desserts. She was a lovely person who enjoyed life and loved to laugh. She showed us love and we loved her right back. Now she is with God and can rest in peace!

We were sadden to hear of the passing of Aunt Lorraine. I remember her thoughtfulness and all the wonderful baked goods. No one could resist all the yummy goodies she prepared. Baking was her passion, and it gave her great pleasure to share it with others. I also remember how she never forgot our birthdays. Even though her resources were limited, she always gave a gift. Now she is in the arms of God celebrating her home coming. She is finally at peace and rest.
She will be missed.
With Sympathy and Love,
Ivy and Harold
