Dennis Yearous, 67, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016 at Methodist Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Fort Des Moines Presbyterian Church, 6001 South Union. Family will greet visitors from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
Dennis was born on January 3, 1949 in Oelwein, Iowa to L. Jerome and Marion (Pardol) Yearous. He was a school teacher and coach for 32 years and touched many lives. To his family and his students, he always taught that it is important to compromise in life. He married Barbara Biven August 4th 1973 in Fayetteville, New York and they celebrated 42 years of marriage together. Dennis served as Elder at Ft. DSM Presbyterian Church and was the president of West Branch Kiwanis Club for many years. He was a member of Mercy Hospital Institutional Review Board and vice president of Somerset Neighborhood Association.
Dennis enjoyed fishing, gardening and reading. He loved playing with his grandkids and liked taking them to the bookstore. He was a fun-loving person, very kind and generous. He always saw the good in people. Many priceless memories were made on family camping trips and trips to the Boundary Waters. He felt it was very important to get family together, to maintain strong family bonds, and to welcome new family members by getting to know them.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Barbara; children, Michael (Stacy) Yearous, Michelle (Kenny) Barnell, and Melissa (Jeremy) O’Neil; sister, Marilyn Albert; grandchildren, Kate, Emma, Patrick, John, Calvin, and Madeline; his dog, Bailey; and many other family members and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, L. Jerome and Marion Yearous.
