Dennis Yearous
February 12, 2016
Dennis Yearous, 67, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016 at Methodist Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Fort Des Moines Presbyterian Church, 6001 South Union. Family will greet visitors from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
Dennis was born on January 3, 1949 in Oelwein, Iowa to L. Jerome and Marion (Pardol) Yearous. He was a school teacher and coach for 32 years and touched many lives. To his family and his students, he always taught that it is important to compromise in life. He married Barbara Biven August 4th 1973 in Fayetteville, New York and they celebrated 42 years of marriage together. Dennis served as Elder at Ft. DSM Presbyterian Church and was the president of West Branch Kiwanis Club for many years. He was a member of Mercy Hospital Institutional Review Board and vice president of Somerset Neighborhood Association.
Dennis enjoyed fishing, gardening and reading. He loved playing with his grandkids and liked taking them to the bookstore. He was a fun-loving person, very kind and generous. He always saw the good in people. Many priceless memories were made on family camping trips and trips to the Boundary Waters. He felt it was very important to get family together, to maintain strong family bonds, and to welcome new family members by getting to know them.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Barbara; children, Michael (Stacy) Yearous, Michelle (Kenny) Barnell, and Melissa (Jeremy) O’Neil; sister, Marilyn Albert; grandchildren, Kate, Emma, Patrick, John, Calvin, and Madeline; his dog, Bailey; and many other family members and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, L. Jerome and Marion Yearous.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Ft. DSM Presbyterian Church.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Dennis' passing. He had a caring personality and a great heart. I have many fond memories of the times he spent on the farm with our family when he was a kid growing up. I remember him coming to see mom when he was going to Upper Iowa for some "personal proof reading" on papers he wrote for classes as my mom was a great editor. He was a guy who saw the value of giving help to others. He certainly showed that during his life.
I know he will be greatly missed by all he touched during his life.

Dennis had been a big part of our community. He helped those of us that needed help. He painted our addresses on the curbs. He was a great person to call a friend. We will miss his laughter, smile, and walks around the block with the dog.Our sincere sympathy.

Dear Yearous Family,
My condolences on your loss.
Mr. Yearous made Math class enjoyable (not Math, but class) and without his extra points for our notebooks I would probably not have passed my classes.
I know he was a great friend to my mother Mary also.
Prayers and love to you during this difficult time.

Our deepest condolences to the Yearous family, we will miss his smiles and waves as he walked his dog in the neighborhood! I will always remember his generosity when my mower was broken and my husband was in the hospital from a severe accident he came over with his riding mower he was working on and took care of the yard for me, it made my day! Our thoughts and prayers are with you....
