Oral Thompson

Oral Leeman Thompson, 93, passed January 30, 2016. He was born in Grinnell, Iowa on September 28, 1922 the son of Cyrus and Ollie (Stuart) Thompson.

Oral graduated from Grinnell High School. He worked at Grinnell College after graduation for a couple of years, then went into farming for area farmers. In 1960, he bought a farm and moved to Altoona, Iowa. He went to work at Economy Forms and then AMF Lawn and Garden both in Des Moines. He went on to retire from AMF but always loved farming.

Oral married Thelma Burnham in Grinnell on June 20, 1943. They had 4 boys.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 1/2 years, Thelma; sons, Ronald (Sheryl) Thompson and Stephen (Marilyn) Thompson; grandchildren, Sheri (Donnie) Parsons, Makella (Lathe) Hagan, Melanie (Chuck) Robinson, Carl (Jen) Thompson and Brett (Stacy) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Josh Thompson, Jeremy (Kim) Parsons, Brandon (Kelci) Parsons, Spencer Parsons (Leslie), Megan (Kyle) Hughes, Kelsie Robinson, Mason Robinson and Mackenzie Hagan, Ethan, Carter, Jack and Christopher Thompson; and great-great-grandchildren, Madilyn and Dakota Parsons, Tucker Robinson and Addieyah Hughes; brothers, Ole (Mary), Virgil (Marge) and Bob Thompson; sisters, Wanda, Velda and Verna; sister-in-law, Marge Logli; many nieces nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Gerald and Randy; brothers, Ray and Loren; sisters, Sharon and Glenda; and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 5, 2016 at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Ave SW, Altoona with burial to follow at Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
