Josephine Sereg

Josephine Frances Salazar Sereg passed away peacefully on January 26, 2016 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2016 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road followed by burial at IOOF Cemetery in Indianola. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 31st from 2 to 4 p.m. with the Rosary recited at 3:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
Josephine was born September 5, 1951 at Mercy Hospital to Lalo and Mary Lou Salazar. She graduated from Mount Marty College with her bachelor's degree in Nursing. Josephine was a Major in the U.S. Army Nurse Core and served from 1973-1976 and in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1976-1987. She spent time stationed in New Jersey, Hawaii and Texas. She married James Robert Sereg on November 3, 1984. Together they had six children. Josephine was a labor and delivery nurse she worked at Broadlawns, Des Moines General and finished her career at Mercy Hospital. Josephine loved being a mother and grandmother. In her free time she enjoyed kickboxing, running around Gray's Lake and participating in 5K races. Josephine was a devote Catholic and loved sharing her faith with her family and friends. She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish.
Josephine was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, James Robert Sereg; children Mary Frances (Sam) Druvenga, Josephine Maria Sereg, Catherine (William) Wegehaupt, Elizabeth Marie Sereg, Anthony Robert Sereg; and grandson, Joseph Carlin Sereg. She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Salazar Sereg and parents, Lalo and Mary Lou Salazar.
Memorials may be dedicated to the family for future designation.

Robert and Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Josie's passing. She was such a gentle soul. I truly enjoyed visiting with you at Erin's wedding, I never dreamed I would be writing a condolence so soon. I have missed the visitation and will miss the services today, but wish I could be there. Peace to you Robert and all of your families. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I always appreciated what she did for us after the fire. She asked her Veterinarian friend in Ankeny to board our cat, who had asthma, for a couple of weeks. She was a very kind and generous person. She will be greatly missed.
