Thomas G. Haley
West Des Moines
Thomas G. Haley, born April 14, 1957 in Pipestone, Minnesota to Kenneth and Barbara (Regenski) Haley, died Monday, January 25, 2016. He passed away peacefully at his home per his wishes.
Services will be held Friday, January 29th, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. with a celebration of life beginning at 7 p.m.
Tom is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kathy; children, Greg Glenn, Patrick Haley, and Erin Haley; granddaughter, Lyric Glenn; sister, Becky Haley; brother, Chris Leiting; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tom grew up playing sports; he was a wrestler, and a baseball and football player all through his school years. He was a 1975 graduate of Valley High School in West Des Moines. Tom went on to graduate from the Police Academy in 1979. He worked as a police officer in Waukee. Prior to an early retirement, Tom was employed by Veterans Auditorium/Polk Co. for 16 years.
Back pain had curbed some of his activities, but he remained an avid fisherman. If he wasn’t going fishing, he was talking about the last catch and looking forward to the next. With a handicap accessible dock close to home he was able to fish from his wheelchair. Tom and Kathy spent countless hours driving to different lakes and fishing holes. Many trips were taken to Jester Park and Big Creek where he would point out shelters and roads that he had helped build when he worked with the Youth Conservation Corps.
Tom was not a fan of hospitals, and his final wishes were to remain at home. His wife and children take great comfort in knowing they were able to fulfill those wishes.
Rest in peace Tom. Hope the fish are bitin’!
