Howard "Dick" Lankford
January 13, 2016
Howard “Dick” Lankford, 82, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Unity Point Health Des Moines Methodist.
Dick was born December 16, 1933 in Des Moines to Howard and Alice (Backstrom) Lankford. He married the love of his life, Donna Magnani on October 9 1954. Dick, known as “Big Daddy” to his co-workers, enjoyed working at the Des Moines Register, where he worked for 42 years without missing a day.
He loved watching the Cubs and the Bears. Dick enjoyed working in his yard, reading and doing the crossword in the newspaper. He was very good with numbers and enjoyed math. He loved going to the bowling alley and watching his son Dick bowl. Although he personally did not like to camp, he took his family camping frequently because he knew how much they enjoyed it. Dick cherished his family and worked hard to provide for them. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Donna; children, Dick, Jim, Lori and Lisa (Roger); grandchildren, Amber (Tim), Austin (Stephanie), Zach and Cheyenne; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Avery; half-sisters, Phyllis, Nancy and Judy; step-brother, Rick; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Alice; sister, Norma; brothers, Bill and Jim; and his in-laws, Sam and Armida Magnani.
The family will greet friends Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 3 to 5 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 5 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 18th at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a charity of their choice in loving memory of Dick.

Dick was one of the sweetest grampas we ever knew! We met when our little boys Zach & Colton met in the park next door to their house. He loved his kids & grandkids so much! The world will be much sadder without him! Love & Prayers
