Russell Steven Bardin
January 11, 2016
Russell Bardin passed away peacefully at Taylor House hospice on January 11, 2016. He was born to Ottavio and Caroline Bardin in Chicago, IL on June 26, 1950.
Russ attended Lane Technical High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology at the University of IL, Chicago. In 1982, he married Chris (Mikels) Bardin and had two children, Dan (Sarah) and Julie (Christopher). His wife and children were the loves of his life and he was their rock. After a successful insurance career in Chicago he and his family moved to Clive, IA. In 2008, he began working for the Iowa Board of Medicine as the Chief Investigator until his formal retirement on January 4, 2016. This last position brought him great satisfaction in his work and relationships with colleagues. Russ loved the music of the 60's and 70's, an afternoon with the ponies or games of chance and was an eclectic reader. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and colleagues.
A memorial service will be held on January 30, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, IA, followed by burial of his cremated remains at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Beacon of Life - Programming Fund, 1717 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309.

For the past 5 years I have had the privilege of working for Russell; who turned out to be one of the best supervisors I have worked for. He was full of intelligence, humor and wit. Positive adjectives to describe him are endless. He had a unique way of expanding our knowledge and vocabulary. It was a joy to see his face light up whenever a conversation about Chicago came up. My sincerest sympathies to his family and friends.

It was one of my greatest joys and privileges knowing Russell. He had a tremendous kindness and compassion about him. At the same time though, he always commanded the room. I've never encountered a person that could say so much with so few words. It was truly an honor to be a part of his world, even for an unfairly short amount of time. Thinking of you always.

Although I didn't work directly with Russell, he was always friendly and good-natured when I spoke with him. I know the employees who worked directly with him loved and respected him. Taken too soon, he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, sir. My deepest condolences to all in his family.

Words can't express the love and joy that Russ brought to us as our boss and friend. Our office will never be the same without his smiling face and willingness to always listen. What a special person we were blessed to have in our lives. Thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Truly ... the best boss ever. With a shared sense of humor, he became more of a friend than a boss.
