Ruth Lightner

Ruth V. Lightner passed away peacefully on January 7, 2016. She was 96 years old. She was loved by many people, family and friends.
Ruth was born on June 17, 1919 to Walter and Bessie Pickett in Des Moines, one of nine children. She attended East High School and Drake University.
In 1940, she married James L. Lightner, and their marriage lasted until his death in 2001. They had two children: a daughter, Karol D. Lightner, and son James R. Lightner.
She excelled in all her hobbies: dancing, knitting, ceramics, art and volunteering. The loves of her life were her family and many friends at the Pioneer Senior Center.
Ruth is survived by her two children; three grand-daughters, Michele Tingle, Kristie Cunningham (Leroy) and Jennifer Chiodo (Jeff); five great-grandchildren, Gianni and Cici Chiodo, Darek Tingle, and Cody and Cael Cunningham; also her daughter-in-law, Kim Lightner, and best friend Beverly Lightner.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents, and all her siblings.
Visitation will be at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, 5-to-8 p.m. Monday, January 11. There will be a private family burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, January 12.

I was one of your old neighbors on Davis. I'm sorry to hear of your mother/ grandmother's passing. We are currently living in the Milwaukee, WI area. We will be praying for your family at this time.

We are sorry to hear about your mom. Just wanted to let you know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Brings back lots of memories from our childhood. She was a great neighbor. We won't be able to attend because we are getting a new granddaughter tomorrow.
