Hubert E. "Sugarfoot" Colyn
December 09, 2015
Hubert Eugene Colyn went to be with his Lord, December 9, 2015, at Taylor House Hospice, after a 25 year battle with Parkinson's.
Hugh was born to James Henry and Fern (Templeton) Colyn, May 6, 1930, in rural Marion County, Iowa. He was married to Glenna Ruth Widmer on February 10, 1957, at First Church of the Open Bible chapel in Des Moines, IA. He and Glenna bought a farm near Runnells, Iowa, in 1963, where he lived until entering the Mitchell Village Care Center two years ago.
Hugh worked as the head Burner Service Engineer for the Des Moines Independent School District for over 30 years and kept the school buildings warm. He was known by friends all over the district as “Sugarfoot.” While working daily for the school district, he also farmed his land and raised a few cattle. During the Korean Conflict, Hugh served as a tank sergeant in the US Army stationed in Germany.
Hugh attended country school in Jasper County, was a member of Berean Assembly of God in Pleasant Hill since 1976, a 35 year member the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 33 and the Runnells American Legion.
The love of his life was his family. Farming, church and family gatherings provided him great enjoyment. His caring ways, his faith and steadfast devotion to his wife Glenna of over 56 years testify to a life well lived.
He will be greatly missed by his family and many close and dear friends. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Dotty May (Sonny) McFadden; Gay Lea (Marvin) Wilson; Joy Lyn (Doug) Sassman, all of Des Moines; Lori Kay (Calvin) Vande Krol, Polk City; his son, Steven Hubert Colyn (Lorri) of Indianola, IA; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Vaughn of Runnells. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Ila Miller.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 14 at Berean Assembly of God, 5299 E. University Ave., in Pleasant Hill. Hugh will be laid to rest at Powers Warren Cemetery near Runnells. Visitation will be Sunday, December 13, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Berean.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missions fund at New Hope Assembly of God, 6800 Townsend Avenue, Urbandale, IA.

Memories of Alyssa Beth Wilson
Grand daughter
There are so many memories of my Papa, especially when I'd stay at the farm with Grammi and him. I would go to sleep with a grandfather clock, and it would tick-tock my way into dreams. Early in the morning I would be awoken by the chime that played. But, that's not the only thing that would wake me up, it would be the gentle thunderstorm rolling in over the pasture... Just kidding, it was Papa snoring, not thunder! It was a true talent to shake the house, but it became part of my sleep as the years went on.
Papa would go work hard on the farm early, but return for breakfast. One of my favorite memories is his "papa eggs." He'd fry them in leftover bacon or sausage grease in a skillet, and would pepper the egg brown in spots. It was a special request of mine whenever I stayed the night.
He was a man that could fix anything. Our old, pedal John Deere tractor would always break, and just like a magician, he would make it new. We still have the tractor, and I look forward to seeing my girls ride it, and sharing memories of Great Papa with them.
When I imagine my Papa now... I see Grammi calling him "Hughie," and the pure joy that must have overwhelmed them both at that moment. That big Papa smile, must have made Grammi's knees weak... he's finally home. They were never meant to be apart, but God has his reasons and they are not of our own. It's one big family reunion, with no more sickness or pain. Even their little yorkie, Little Bit, under Papa's arm, with her leash dragging behind.
I love you, Papa. I'll always be your Elizabeth.
