Kelly L. Mitchell, 65, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born in Altoona, Iowa on September 22, 1950, and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a resident of the Des Moines area for most of his life.
Kelly loved and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren, feeding the squirrels, enjoying a hearty laugh, and playing cards. He was a generous man always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends and fellow veterans down on their luck. He also brightened the lives of many children on multiple occasions by playing Santa Claus.
Kelly is survived by seven siblings, Jeff, Ed, Chris and Shane Mitchell, Judy Keller, Kathy Decarlo, and Liz Curtis two sons, Michael and Brian, daughter-in-law, Tymber, five grandchildren, Haley, Dustin, Gabriel, Kaylin, and Bethany. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nora J. Mitchell and his beloved sister, Patricia Duncan.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, December 14th at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Memorial service will begin at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 15th, also at Hamilton’s. Burial of cremated remains will take place at 12:30 pm Tuesday at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.

Uncle Kelly, I miss you so much. I know we didn't get to see each other much since I moved to New York but you knew how much I love you. Always my "rock". RIP?
I'm so glad I was able to make it back to Des Moines for your services and spend time with your boys and their families.

Kelly and I were in the same grade in the '50s while attending Polk Hill School, a small one room schoolhouse east of Des Moines. Friendships had to be formed during school time because we all had to get home to do chores, but I enjoyed those years being friends with Kelly. My condolences to the family.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I met Kelly 5 years ago when I was his roommate at the VA hospital. He was only my friend for a short while but he was a good one and I have not forgotten his cheerful company. From a fellow veteran, rest in peace, friend.

I met Kelly at the visitation of my mother's death in 2010, and unfortunately I failed to maintain a relationship, and now I am so sorry to learn of Kelly's passing.
The children and siblings of Kelly have my deepest sympathies.

So sorry to have recieved word of your dad's passing so late. I worked with Kelly at Vitran years ago and had such a respect and appreciation of him. Whatever he took on in life he did it 100 mph and did not veer from what he was going to do. You knew he meant what he said and he had the personsal conviction to do it. Most likely I have not mentioned anything new to your family but I did want to say he was important to me as both a mentor and friend.
