Lucile Ann was born on September 28, 1920 to Allen F. and Magadalena Figge Jeffers in Clive. Lucile grew up in Beaverdale and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1939. Talented on roller skates, she met Lawrence Emil (Lorney) Dennis at a roller rink in the 1930s. They married on August 16, 1940 and celebrated 66 years of life together. Their son Lawrence William (Bill) was the center of their lives. For four years during WW II, Lucile and her extended family were left to carry on while Lorney was in the European and North African theaters of the war.
In 1945, Lucile started a secretarial and supervisory career at Meredith Publishing Company. She remained with them for 47 years, several years past the usual retirement age. She enjoyed her job and the many friends that she had there. Her biggest joy, however, was raising her son. She loved the challenge of encouraging him to excel in whatever he would try.
Lucile was active in the choir for many years and after he retired, Lorney joined her. They continued with a Renew group for 12 years, and they took pleasure in doing what they could for their parish. More than anything, she loved to play cards and bingo. Almost every lunch break at Meredith found her at a cribbage game or pitch. And she was competitive! She wanted to win. Even in her final month of life when she was so ill, she could still do the thinking necessary for a challenging game of cribbage.
Lucile is survived by her son Bill (Rhonda), grandson David (Angela Rubino) and great granddaughter Sophia Elizabeth of Ankeny, daughter-in-law Cicily Dennis of Altoona, sister Harriet Petosa of West Des Moines and brother Carl Jeffers of Flagstaff, Arizona, and sister-in-law Dorothy Dennis of Des Moines along with several nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Lorney.
