Lon Tullar

September 25, 2015

Service Details

On September 25, 2015, in Des Moines, IA, at the age of 68, Lon Robert Tullar suffered complications following heart surgery and went to be with the Lord. Lon was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on August 19, 1947, to Burnell DeWayne Tullar and Violet Helen (Pasch) Tullar. He was the third of five children.

After graduating from high school in Aberdeen, Lon enlisted in the Navy and served in the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in business. He then attended Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa, and in 1974 graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree. Lon stayed in Iowa and opened his own law practice and served for a period of time as a county attorney.

Though he was a lawyer by profession, Lon was a jack of all trades. If something needed to be fixed or built, he took joy in getting it done, often with one or more of his kids by his side. Electrician, plumber, carpenter, upholsterer, landscaper – he did it all and more.

Some of Lon’s favorite things to do were attending the Iowa State Fair, listening to and watching storms, landscaping his yard, taking long drives, and drinking a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise. More than anything, though, he enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Lon is survived by his four children: Andrew Tullar, Ashlie (and Daniel) Van Horn, Aaron (and Amanda) Tullar and Alexa Tullar; 7 grandchildren: Elliahna, Aaliyah, Cambriah, Koby, Kaeden, Kattibree and Keenan; two sisters: Diane (and Tom) Wahl and Lou Anne (and Eugene) Aberle.

Lon was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Mark Tullar and Duane Tullar.

A service to celebrate Lon’s life and memory will be held at Capitol City Church on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 11:00 a.m.
