Whenever I stopped by KWKY Radio to see a deejay friend, Lyle Newman was often times on the other side of the glass conducting a variety of tasks. His role as the station's engineer was making sure things were kept humming. Yet he was so unassuming he could just as well have been mistaken for a visitor, too, when he was actually rationing his energy to allow for peak usage, perhaps for a game of golf, a hunting trip or the time his creative genius had the station quickly back on the air after the broadcasting facility was destroyed by fire.
Occasionally, I'd also catch him performing with his band, The Country Boys, in the lounge of the Holiday Inn South where for 13 years the faithful also ordered songs to spike their drinks. Maurie Goode fronted the show, but it was Lyle's band alright, it's just that he was never one seeking recognition, all he wanted to do was play country music. About the only time he was close to the microphone was when his lanky frame passed by it to take his position on the back side of the stage where he stoically stood plucking that bass.
If you can conjure up that picture, then you've seen a glimpse of the special gentleman known as Lyle Newman. What a gentle man he was, this Navy veteran, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, friend and husband of his beloved Wathena, who provided the real tempo to his life for 72 years before she passed away. Now they have all of eternity together, although Lyle is likely in the process of putting another band together if he hasn't done so already. Did I mention he really liked country music?

I played with Lyle's band for a number of years, and fondly remember having lots of good times and meeting many friends along the way. Would stop by the radio station occasionally to chat. See you again in a while, old friend.
