Albert Scaglione
September 23, 2015
Albert P. Scaglione, Jr., 66, died of cancer Wednesday at Bright Kavanaugh Hospice. He valiantly battled that disease for 12 years. The family will greet friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.
Al was the son of Albert and Mary Scaglione, who preceded him in death. He was born on January 2, 1949 in Des Moines. Al attended St. Anthony grade school, and graduated in 1967 from Dowling High School. He served two years in the Army, stationed for 6 months in Korea during the Viet Nam conflict. He was very proud of his military service, and flew the flag at home quite often.
Professionally, Al was the food guy. His career began at Riccelli’s where at age 14 he was a busboy, and continued on through multi-unit restaurant management for Perkins, Duff’s, and the Choice Smorgasbord. Al moved into food sales, and for 18 years was a Marketing Associate for Sysco Food Services of Iowa. He retired in 2008, and took the unpaid, labor-of-love job titled “Papa”. His duties included chauffeuring grandchildren to dentist appointments, helping with Valentine parties and field days at Jefferson school, preparing after school snacks and overseeing homework. Those children were the motivation he needed in his war against cancer. Pizza Friday Nights and long bike rides through Water Works Park are just two of the memories those children will cherish.
Al was preceded in death by his sister, Julie Pierce. He is survived and very much mourned by his wife of 25 years, Kathy, his stepdaughter Gina, her two children Michael Albert and Katie Marie, and sisters Vicki (Jim) Brand and Kathy Houseman. Nieces, nephews, and countless cousins will also mourn our loss.

Kathy, decades ago, you introduced me to Al. From that moment on, each time I heard your names mentioned or caught you on Facebook I would think what a nice couple you were and I felt you were blessed. Know that he is in the hands of God.
