Juanita Swackhammer

Juanita Swackhammer, 85, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at West Lakes Mercy Hospital surrounded by family.
Juanita was born March 23, 1930 in Keota, Missouri to Willard and Opal Mason. On May 23, 1947 she married Ancel Swackhammer and the couple moved to Des Moines in 1951. Juanita enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, and most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was employed by the Iowa Legislature, House of Representatives from 1965 until her retirement in 2000.
Juanita is survived by her children, Cindy (Gary) Cheney, Steve (Michele) Swackhammer and Gina Swackhammer; daughter-in-law, Denise Swackhammer; her adopted daughter, Sheila Weeks; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; four siblings; and a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Ancel; son, Gary Swackhammer; grandson, Andrew Swackhammer; brothers, Junior and Delbert Mason; sisters, Lucille Gipson and Geneva Hagar; and grandson-in-law, John Quick.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends beginning at noon on Wednesday at the funeral home.
