Virginia Ann Thompson, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Midwest Palliative & Hospice Care Center in Glenview, Illinois. She was born September 2, 1922, to Charles and Diana Black in Iowa City.

Virginia graduated from North High School. She was Chief Deputy Clerk for Des Moines Municipal Court and, later, at the Polk County Courthouse for more than 30 years until her retirement.

Virginia was an avid reader who especially enjoyed biographies, historical novels and non-fiction. She loved to travel, an interest that began as a young child when she and her parents took summer road trips to the national parks. During World War II she crisscrossed the U.S. with her former husband, who served in the U.S. Army, prior to his being shipped overseas in 1944. For her 75th birthday, Virginia traveled to England, where she visited many of the historical settings that she had read about over the years. And, always, she took time away from work to visit her grandchildren in Illinois at least twice every year.

She is survived by her daughter, Patience Kramer of Wilmette, Illinois; grandchildren, Jason Kramer, who resides in Pittsburgh, and Stephanie Kramer of Berlin, Germany; and one great-grandchild, Adah Kramer-Brownlee of Pittsburgh.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Prudence Diana Thompson.

Services will be held Saturday, August 29, 2015, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Family will begin greeting friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

A memorial services will be held at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Wilmette, Illinois, at a later date.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Des Moines Public Library or MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) in Virginia’s name.
