Carroll D. De Zwarte
August 09, 2015
Carroll D. De Zwarte, 74, of West Des Moines passed on from this life at Mercy Hospice Johnston on August 9, 2015. Services will be held Thursday, August 13, 2015, at 10:30am at New Hope Assembly, 4425 70th Street in Urbandale. Interment will be at the Sully Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday evening from 5:30-8pm at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines. Memorials may be designated to Freedom for Youth or Joshua Christian Academy.
Carroll Dwayne De Zwarte was born February 6, 1941, in rural Jasper County to Bernard and Wilma De Zwarte. He grew up northwest of Sully, attended Buena Vista No. 1 country school, and graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School in 1959.
On January 5, 1961, he was united in marriage with Rosalie Van Wyk in Sully. He farmed for 20 years in Jasper County. In 1981, he moved to West Des Moines where he operated cleaning, painting, construction, and manufacturing businesses. Later he became a financial planner and branch manager of LPL Financial. Most recently he established and operated Freedom Houses, a place for those seeking recovery.
Carroll loved to travel to the south for the winter. In the summer, he enjoyed taking his grandchildren and friends on trips. He once drove to Alaska to the Arctic Circle on the longest day of the year. Other interests were delivering motorhomes around the U.S., flying airplanes, gardening and helping out on the farm.
He had a caring heart for people of all ages. He showed this by mentoring, advising and helping them in any way he could, both practically and spiritually in a Christ centered way. Carroll faithfully served the Church in many capacities.
Carroll is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rosalie De Zwarte and their three children, Brent (Denise) De Zwarte of rural Newton and their two children, Ryan (Mallory) De Zwarte of Kellogg (and their son Maxwell) and Ashley De Zwarte; Terry (Margaret) De Zwarte of Lake In the Hills, IL, and their children Levi, Grace and Jovee; and Darlys (John) Purdy of Des Moines and their children Bailey and Samantha. Carroll is also survived by his sister Linda (Dennis) Van Maanen and his brother Glen (Carol) De Zwarte. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Wilma De Zwarte.

Carroll was the best man I have ever met; He married Dave and I 5/25/1985, provided us words from his heart that I will cherish as long as I can remember them. I would then run into him at my place of employment as he was giving men rides to appointments after he would buy them breakfast. He would do anything for anyone. You don't meet too many men like Carroll and I will always remember his gentle spirit, kind words and thoughtfulness. He will always be in my heart.
