John Backstrom

John W. Backstrom, of Woodburn and formerly of Des Moines, passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Clark County Hospital in Osceola, with his loving family beside him. John was born on July 27, 1925, to George and Alice Backstrom in Des Moines.
John served his country proud and brave in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He married Betty J. Gordon on December 15, 1943 and together they were blessed with 63 years before her passing in 2007. He worked in the concrete business at Crown, Central and Marquette before retiring from Duke Ready Mix in 1981.
He enjoyed NASCAR racing, boxing, the peacefulness of living in the country, and bird watching.
Those left to honor his memory are his daughter, Terry (Mike) Porter; sons, Robert and Mark, all of Woodburn; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his lovely wife, Betty; son, John; brothers, George and David; and his sisters, Molly Carico and Shirley George.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery directly following the service.

Bob, Mark, Terry and family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Your Dad was a sweet man, I have lots of pleasant memories of him and Georgie. You are in my thoughts and my prayers. Hold on to the memories you have, they somehow make it a little easier. They have all been reunited again in Heaven!
