Lorriane V. (Nelson) Kern Hutchinson was born in Gentry, MO, to James Reed Nelson and Margaret Marie (Overbay) Nelson on December, 9, 1929. Lorriane was united in marriage with James R. Kern on December 2, 1946 in Troy, Kansas. They were blessed with three daughters, Sharon Sue who died as an infant, Pamela Joan and Roberta Lea. Lorraine enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. Jim and Lorraine were both active with the Saylor Township Fire Department serving as EMTA’s and Jim was Fire Chief at the time of his death in 1980. Lorraine worked at Lint Van Lines. Lorraine married Earldene Hutchinson on October 21, 1989 in Des Moines. Dene was retired from John Deere. He passed away in 2007.

Lorraine was a wonderful caregiver. She had been a member of Bethany Reformed Church and the Highland Park Christian Church. She enjoyed her yard, gardening and flowers. She loved her family and grandchildren. She will be remembered for loving the color pink. She lived most of her life in Des Moines. She was currently a resident at Prairie Vista Village assisted living until suffering a brain aneurism which led to her death on June 20, 2015.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Pam VanDyke (Marvin) of Sully, IA and Roberta Johnson (Frank Kowal) of Omaha, NE; her grandchildren: Jason VanDyke (Nikki) of Kalona, IA, Derek VanDyke (Cassie) of Pella, IA, Amy Helmuth (Clint) of Kalona, IA, Travis Johnson (Sarah Campbell) of Des Moines, IA, Megan Johnson of Huxley, IA, her 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-granddaughter; her nieces and nephew, Deb Coffin (Steve) of Des Moines, Jennifer Peters of Des Moines, and Jeff Peters (Lori) of Wilmington, NC.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon; her husbands, her parents, her sisters, Dorothy Peters and Elizabeth Nelson; her brother, James Nelson Jr.; her grandson, Adam Johnson; her son-in-law, T.G. Johnson; her brother-in-law, Frederick Kern, and sister-in-law, Violet Cook.

She will be laid to rest at Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be directed to Bethany Reformed Church in loving memory of Lorraine.
