Mildred C. Kelly, 90, died of heart failure Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 13th at Our Lady of the America’s (Visitation) Catholic Church in Des Moines with interment at Glendale Cemetery.
Mildred was born January 23, 1917 in Des Moines. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1934 and married Jerry Kelly in 1939. Together they raised seven children. Mildred was a strong advocate of Catholic education and worked as the secretary at Visitation/Holy Family School for 28 years before retiring.
Mildred will always be remembered by her family and friends for her kind soul, deep Catholic faith and love for rocks and trees. She touched many lives and spent countless hours volunteering. She delivered groceries for Polk County Supplemental Foods, was a Eucharistic Minister to residents at nursing homes and tutored at Holy Family School. Mildred lived life to the fullest, attending every event possible for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved Dowling Catholic athletics and was their #1 fan.
She is survived by her two sons, John of Des Moines and Bob (Roxanne) of Windsor Heights; four daughters, Kathy (Glenn) Custar of Naperville, IL, Peggy Kelly of Johnston, Mary Pat (Mike) Floro of Ankeny and Nancy Valencia of Solana Beach, CA; daughter-in-law, Marylee Kelly of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, son Mike and grandson Adam.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dowling Foundation for tuition assistance to benefit Holy Family students.
