Donna M. Smith, 87, died Thursday, June 18, 2015. She was born August 9, 1927 to Ora and Emma Shoning in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from East High School in 1945. She worked for Super Value warehouse, Des Moines Catering, Operating Engineers, and the Iowa Legislature House and Senate from 1965 to 1978.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Howard of Des Moines; daughter, Donna Marie (David) McLaughlin of Arlington Heights, IL; granddaughter, Ann (Keith) Wakeman of Wheaton, IL; grandson, Sten (Adela) McLaughlin of Boise, ID; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and special nephew, Ted (Corine) Hanke.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dick Shoning; and sister, Maxine Dale.
Per her wishes, cremation has occurred and any memorials may be sent to Staves Church or the Animal Rescue League.

She will be missed. She had a fabulous sense of humor combined with an "up" type personality. She was a giving, caring person as well as a good friend to my mother, Dotty Collins. Howard, may God keep you close to Him. Hands together for you as well as the rest of the family.

Phil and I were so saddened when we read in the Register this morning of Donna's death. We pray God will comfort you in your loss.

Donna was a lovely lady. I worked next to her my first two years as an Iowa House clerk -- she worked for State Rep. Charlie Poncy and I for Wally Horn. I had just graduated from Drake and she was so kind and friendly to me.
