Service Details

Erdyne Janet Whiteside went to be with her Lord and Saviour at Mercy Hospice in Johnston on Monday, June 15, 2015. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service to begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Rising Sun Church of Christ, 6390 Rising Sun Drive, with burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Erdyne was born on February 25, 1936 in Centerville, Iowa to Simon and Ruth Estes. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1954. Shortly after moving to Des Moines she became a teacher’s aide for the Des Moines Public Schools for over 25 years and retired from the Special Education Department from Hoover High School in 2000.
Erdyne was a wonderful cook and loved to bake Christmas cookies with her children and grandchildren. At Christmas time at Erdyne’s it was all about the hundreds of cookies laid out from the front porch to the kitchen. From gingerbread cookies to lemon bars, congo bars, sugar cookies, and Christmas wreaths with her always especially wonderful chocolate chip cookies.

Erdyne was a world traveler with her bags always packed ready to go. She had to have an overnight bag ready “just in case” someone needed her to take them somewhere. One of her proudest moments was visiting South Africa and meeting the wonderful South African choir and later bringing them to Iowa as exchange students for a whole school year. Erdyne also traveled all over the state of Iowa with the choir as they toured the state and had several singing engagements.

Erdyne leaves to cherish in her memory: her brother Simon (Ovida) Estes; her children: Dwane (Linda) Estes, Monnica (Donald) Bailey, Glen (Janet) Whiteside II, Patricia Whiteside, William Taylor, Robert Whiteside, and LaKeshea (Stan) Trevino. She also leaves to cherish many grandchildren, great grandchildren and her special granddaughter, her “sweetheart” Lillian Whiteside-Collier.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Simon and Ruth Estes; daughter Jeannette Fugate; and her sisters: Consuela, Patricia, and Westella.
