Linda Suzanne "Sue" (Wheeldon) Hills
June 03, 2015
Sue Hills, 66, was born October 11, 1948 to Herbert and Elsie (Anthony) Wheeldon and passed on June 3, 2015 after a brave two-year fight with cancer.
Sue graduated from dear old East High School in 1966, Grand View College in 1968 and Drake University in 1970 earning a BS in Sociology. Sue proudly worked for the Veterans Administration for almost 30 years, starting in Des Moines and transferring to the Twin Cities where she spent her last 17 years before retiring in 2008. Sue had the honor and privilege of working directly with veterans and their families serving them with unparalled compassion and grace.
Sue was many things to so many people but she will be remembered most for her quick wit, generous spirit, inability to spell, love of Tom Selleck, ever-present water bottle, orneriness, whistle, sincere lack of desire to cook, East Side pride and passion for animals. She was proud of the bleacher butt she earned while not quietly watching 30+ years of her husband, kids and grandkids in sports.
Sue is survived by the love of her life of 34 years, Skip; children, Tiffany (Jaret) Vasey and Trevor Hills; stepson, James (Dawn) Lucken Hills; grandchildren, Braeden and Deacon Vasey; step grandson, Amos; brothers, Wayne (Marsha) Wheeldon and Tom (Helen) Wheeldon; beloved diva cat, Molly; and innumerable friends and family who are certainly better for knowing and loving her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Karen Wheeldon.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2015 at Altoona Christian Church, 2890 1st Avenue South, Altoona. Family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the John Stoddard Cancer Center or to the Blank Park Zoo in Sue’s loving memory.
See ya later, alligator!

My condolences to Skip and the entire family. Sue was always honest, straightforward and pleasant. She knew who she was and it was all good. Minnesota veterans lost a true hero when Sue retired from VA. My thoughts and prayers are with you Skip.

I am saddened to hear of Sue's death. I only saw it this evening, and so missed the opportunity to be at her service. I was just thinking about her yesterday, though I haven't seen her for years. I cherish the time we worked together and the years of friendship we shared. I regret that we didn't remain in touch, but life intervenes. She was one of the kindest and funniest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. She had such a fun spirit and was a great mimic. I will never forget how she would entertain me with the Raisins/Heard it Through the Grapevine commercial imitation, when I would get bored at work! After all of these years, it still makes me smile. Skip and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how much you will miss her.

I received news of Suzanne's passing from my sister. I last saw her at my retirement party and then I moved to Texas. I've known Suzanne since kindergarten at Willard. We were in my mom's Brownie troop, she sang at my Job's Daughter Installation and my wedding. Suzanne's voice was such a treasure. I have never forgotten how much fun we had as kids and what a good friend Suzanne was and always will be in my heart. My condolences to Skip, Wayne and Tom and families. Eastsiders forever. God Bless You Suzanne.

I noticed this in the paper, and while I have not seen Suzanne for many years, I remember her and her family fondly from the days we were Rainbow Girls at East Gate. I especially remember how beautifully she sang "Autumn Leaves" at an Installation. In the passing years, I never heard the song that I did not think of her. My sympathy to her family and friends.
