Julie Ann Proffitt, 57, died peacefully June 3, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a hard fought and spirited battle against cancer.

Julie was born June 25, 1957, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Jeanne (Ruthenburg) and Lawrence Proffitt. She moved to Dubuque, Iowa, with her family at age 6 and moved to Muscatine, Iowa, at age 12 after her father passed away. At age 16, after her mother’s death, she went to live with her Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Carl Edgington and family. She graduated from Muscatine High School and then attended the University of Iowa. While in high school and college, Julie worked for Hy-Vee Food Stores in Muscatine and Coralville. In 1986, she began working for Hy-Vee full-time as an Assistant Manager. She was promoted to the corporate office in 1988 as a Trainer and was most recently the Assistant Vice President, Support Services, spanning a career with Hy-Vee of over 40 years. Besides time with her Hy-Vee family and friends, Julie enjoyed collecting Isabel Bloom statues, and was an avid collector of unique art which decorated her home. Julie really enjoyed life! She was well-loved, had a terrific sense of humor, and always had a positive attitude.

She will be greatly missed by her siblings, Janne Dusenberry, Brian (Deborah) Proffitt, and Jill (Dean) Gerdts; nieces and nephews, Melinda Phillips, Kenny (Susan) Dusenberry, Laura (Travis) Colvin, Joel Proffitt, and Kelly and Ben Gerdts; her second mother, Aunt Phyllis Edgington; cousins, Mark (Diane) and Greg (Tina) Campbell; her many devoted friends inside and apart from Hy-Vee; her devoted friend and caregiver, Marsh Reynolds; and Lexie “the dog”. Julie was preceded in death by her parents; a nephew, Larry Koehler; an uncle, Carl Edgington; and a cousin, Ricky Campbell.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with sharing of memories and stories at 7 p.m. Visitation in Muscatine, Iowa, will be Saturday, June 13, from 1 until 3 p.m. at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home with a graveside service following at Memorial Park Cemetery in Muscatine.
