Norman Earl Wenig, 84, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 17, 2015.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 22nd at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, 314 E Army Post Road, Des Moines, Iowa . His son, Bill Wenig will be officiating. Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at Oakland Mills Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, IA. The family will be receiving friends from 5 until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21st at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.

Norm was born March 17, 1931 in Gray, Iowa to William and Pearl (Shaw) Wenig. He graduated from Grey High School in 1949 and from Central Bible College in 1959. He was drafted and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On June 11, 1954, he married Virginia Sorey Wenig in Woodbine, Iowa. After Virginia’s death, Norm married Katherine McDonald Wenig on July 25, 1998.

Norm was ordained with the Assemblies of God in 1962 and was affectionately known as “Pastor Norm”. Norm’s ministry years included evangelist (1959-1960), pastor in Webster City, Iowa (1960-1964), Iowa state youth director for the Assemblies of God, (1964-1970), pastor in Burlington, Iowa (1970-1996), and return to traveling as an evangelist (1996-2015). Norm was honored for his fifty years of ordained ministry on April 24, 2012. He also served in discipleship and marriage counseling roles at Glad Tidings Assembly of God in his later years. Hundreds of marriages were restored because of Norm’s counseling.

Norm’s passion was sharing the love of Jesus with anyone who would listen and he never wavered from that until his last breath. Norm’s ministry flowed from a daily, living relationship with Jesus Christ. In addition to ministry, Norm always had time for family and friends. He was never one to turn down a round of cards or an opportunity to hunt or fish. His hunting and fish stories were unforgettable. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh and never ending love for people. He always had a new idea for reaching more people for Christ.

Norm is survived by his children, Dan (Becky) Wenig of Burlington, Iowa, Bill (Shari) Wenig of Des Moines, Iowa, Rachelle (Greg) Colegrove of Nixa, Missouri, grandchildren, Cherissa, Jake, Isaiah, Dan and Erica Wenig, Donovan and Devon Colegrove; Kathy’s children, Phil (Michele) Dickey of Urbandale, Iowa, Jane (Tim) Foreman of Grimes, Iowa; Kathy’s grandchildren, Brett and Ryan Foreman, Brandon Stanley and Preston Cole; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon (Lola) Wenig of Springfield, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Pearl, his wife Virginia, his brother Robert Wenig, and his sister Ardis Augspurger.
