Patricia Ann Scruggs, 79, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.
Patricia was born October 10, 1935 in Lucas County, Iowa to Harold Egbert, Sr. and Anna (Pavlik) Egbert. She was raised on the family farm and moved to Des Moines as a young person to live with her sister. She was employed by State Auto Insurance and faithfully made her way to work every day, even after they moved their offices to West Des Moines. She married Carlus Roy Scruggs. Patricia was widely known and will be remembered as fastidious, punctual, and steadfast in her independence and determination. These qualities made her many years of fighting cancer an amazing battle.
Patricia is survived by her sisters, Louise (Gene) Gourd of Des Moines, Lucille (Robert) Pohlenz of Hortense, GA, and Donna Ludlow of Des Moines; and twelve nieces and nephews and their families. The family wishes to acknowledge the many friends and medical personnel who attended her faithfully throughout her intense battle with cancer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; brothers, Joe Egbert and Leonard Egbert; and her parents, Anna and Harold.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Taylor House Hospice or to Stoddard Cancer Center/Powell Adult Oncology.

There just doesn't see to be any easy way to say goodbye. We've shared so much life and so much laughter that it's really hard to imagine what things will be like without you. I will always keep you in my mind and my heart.

God blessed me when Patty and her family "adopted" me and included me in all their family gatherings. She was always there for the big events in my life. The fondest memories I have are sitting around at the farm and visiting. She was always kind to me and enriched my life.

Patty's Christmas card was always the first card of the season that I would receive. It would bring a smile to my face thinking, "Patty's card is here, Christmas is coming!" Speaking of smiling...she always was. A very "glass-half-full" person. I remember being drawn to her as a little girl, she radiated such a pleasant, positive spirit.

Morgan's Aunt Pat was a wonderful woman. From the time Morgan was born Aunt Pat rarely missed a holiday sending a card for Morgan. She sent her cards for Halloween, Easter, birthdays and Christmas. When Morgan came for the summers as a child and Bob and Donna were working Morgan would spend her days with her Aunt Pat, she taught her so much. She loved her very much. Morgan graduated high school Sunday, one day after she passed. Her whole family was here in St. Louis and broke the news to Morgan in person, I truly believe that is the way Pat wanted it. She will be greatly missed. My condolences to the entire family.

Aunt Patty, I would not have missed the chance to take this roller coaster ride with you for the world. I am so pleased to have been given the blessing of knowing you in ways that I never would have, had it not been for being there, when I could for you. And what a terrific support group you really did have! We will think of you so often....and can only hope that your habits of taking care of business right away teaches us to do the same.

I am very lucky to have gotten to meet and grow to love Aunt Pat when I joined the family a few years back. Her spirit and internal strength were inspiring. And I always looked forward to sitting down and having a conversation with her. She was an intelligent, witty, caring woman, and really made me feel like family. I will always cherish my favorite memories of Aunt Pat. I love you, Aunt Pat. You will be dearly missed.
