Service Details

Carl Richard Cheers, 80, was born February 15, 1935, in Arispe, Iowa, the son of Claude and Martha (Bridger) Cheers. He passed away peacefully Sunday, May 10, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Carl graduated from Arispe High School in 1953. Following graduation, he married Norma White and was a farm hand until 1959 when he went to work for Venetian Iron Works until 1980. Carl owned and operated Cheers Welding and Fabrication for 18 years, during which he received his Welding Certification, and retired in 1998.

Carl enjoyed his John Deere tractors and loved camping and RV’ing with his family, especially when the kids were young. He was a member of Excel of Iowa Camping Club and the Central Iowa Tractor Club.

Carl was the most hard-working man you would ever meet. He started working at age 16 because his father was disabled, which helped him establish a strong work ethic throughout his life. He was extremely crafty, talented and handy, building and fixing anything. (He could “rig and jig” as Norma liked to say). Carl was a fun-loving, very ornery, witty man.

Above all else, he treasured the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Norma Cheers; children, Marsha (Tim) Brandt, Connie (Mark) Smith, Karen (Kevin) Colwell, Randy (Amy) Cheers and Nancy (Troy) Doran; grandchildren: Eric, Casey, Luke, Nick, Joe, Kyle, Shane, Schelsy, Stephanie, Kassie, Alyssa, and Shaylee; great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Isaac, Chloe, and Evie; two sisters, Kay Graham and Kathie Parcher; and two brothers, Don Cheers and Jack Cheers; other loving relatives and many special friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan Cheers.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW in Altoona. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the church, with burial to follow at Powers-Warren Cemetery in Adelphi, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to Care Initiative Hospice or John Stoddard Cancer Center in loving memory of Carl.
