Thomas Dean Kern, 66, passed away peacefully at his home on May 6, 2015. He will be laid to rest at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Thomas was born October 10, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa to Lois and George Kern, Jr. He graduated from Wartburg College with a degree in Social Studies and worked for the State of Iowa until his retirement. He retired as the Supervisor of State Disability Determination.
He will be greatly missed by his sister, Judy Rasmussen of Urbandale, IA; brother, Robert (Jacquie) Kern of Chicago, IL; his nieces, Cristin (Brett) Glenn, Kimberly (Jeff) Hedges, and Nicole (Mike) Ihrig; great-nieces, Megan, Allison, and Ashley Hedges, Kennedy Ihrig, and Gabbie Glenn; and great-nephew, Gavin Glenn. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, John B. Rasmussen.

I have just learned of Tom's death in May. I have known Tom for well over 50 years. We attended both Middle School and High School together and then we worked together, within the same State Agency, for over 30 years. I lost track of him after he retired. My Deepest Sympathy goes out to his family.

We have been a neighbor of Tom's for the past 12 years. We always admired his meticulously kept lawn and perfectly potted flowers. We could tell that he took great pride in keeping his home looking nice. I hope that the new owners love it as much as he did. Rest in Peace, Tom.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tom. He was a good neighbor and friend of 20 years. Tom was a very kind and generous man. We will miss him.
