Tillie Y. Palmer, 96, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Genesis Senior Living Center.
Tillie was born January 1, 1919 in Des Moines to Rudolfo and Immaculata (Desimone) Lucia. She was a lifelong Des Moines resident. Tillie retired from St. Anthony School where she had been a “Lunch Lady” for 14 years. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony Altar and Rosary Society and the Society of Italian-Americans Auxiliary.
Tillie is survived by her children, Alice (Larry) Woods, Tony (Judie) Palmer and Maxine (Mike) Flaherty; sisters-in-law, Catherine Lucia, Josephine Walker and Fena Lucia; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joseph; brothers, Fred, Lonnie and Gene Lucia; sisters, Frances Rizzuti, Mary Ann DePhillips, Catherine Severino and Lee DeGrado; great-granddaughter, Kacey Jo Flaherty; great-grandson, Frankie Lou Cataldo; and her sisters-in-law, Mary Cotrone and Pauline Lucia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. with the Rosary recited and Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Max and Alice, I am so sorry to read about Tillie today in the paper. I cared about her very much - I was one of the nurses who cared for your father so many years ago and she was so special (as were both of you).

Sorry to hear of Tillie's death. She was quite the lady! Probably got to know her best when she got sick at Mass at Christ the King once. She helped me understand how people could be embarrassed by the commotion they cause in a situation like that and thus to be more understanding whenever it happened in the future. Tony, Max & Alice: On behalf of the entire Jordan family, I'd like to offer our most heartfelt condolences. There was always an extra scoop on our trays when Tillie was on the line. Her smile was always there, and always warm. I hope Mama has found her friend Tillie and they're having a great time with Aunt Clara. Alice, Maxine, and Tony: Sorry to hear about Aunt Tillie. She truly represents the end of an era. The mothers of her time always had their priorities in order. Love of family and others always came first. I always admired her spirit as did my mother.

Alice, Maxine, and Tnoy; She loved to tease and tell jokes. She loved her time at the cabin in Bemidji, especially when she had a fishing pole in her hands.

What a wonderful long life Tillie must have had with all that family. Truly a blessing to each and everyone of you I am sure. May she rest in peace in the arms of our loving father until you all meet again. My heartfelt condolences to all of you. I lived across the street from Alice when I was a child and I met Tillie once or twice. Very sweet lady.

Maxine, I remember your mom as such a sweet, kind woman. She is one of the last Italians from the 40's and 50's who may our childhood so memorable. May her soul RIP! Renee and I are so sorry for your loss.

I didn't know Mrs. Palmer personally, but she must have been one great lady to have raised such a beautiful and caring daughter, Maxine. And she must have been an amazing role model to her granddaughter Missy, who herself is a very special friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
