Service Details

Melvin Lovell, 89, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Interment will be at Lowman Cemetery in Runnells, Iowa. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
Melvin was born on February 11, 1918 to Elmer and Maude Lovell in Lucas, Iowa. He grew up in Runnells area and graduated from there in 1938. Melvin loved sports and played baseball, softball, basketball and football. He was a six man All American football player. He married Virginia Winegar in March of 1942. They had two children Dixie and Don. Melvin enjoyed attending his grandchildren sporting events following them to many states as well as the metro areas. He loved to play cards and listen to good music. He was a member of Grant Park Christian Church and enjoyed many church friends. Melvin was an avid golfer and played as many as five times a week after his retirement. He enjoyed all the family dinners and celebrations and traveling in years past.
Melvin is survived by his wife, L. Virginia Lovell of Des Moines; his children, Dixie Carlson of Pleasant Hill and Don Lovell (Mary Ann) of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Alan Lovell (Cydney) of Cedar Rapids, Major Jeffrey Lovell (Monika) of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Joel Carlson (Darcy) of Madison, Wisconsin, Tim Lovell of Hollywood, California, Dan Lovell of Marshalltown, Shannon Carlson of Fort Collins, Colorado, Dena Lovell Tisor (Jeff) of Denver, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Jayden and Brody Lovell of Cedar Rapids and Tyra Lovell of North Carolina; sisters in law, Cassie Kaiser of Des Moines, Charlotte Lovell of Melcher and Jeannie Monohan (JB) of Las Vegas, Nevada; brothers in law, Harry Winegar (Evelyn) of Des Moines and Wilton Warren of Las Vegas, Nevada; and several nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, three sisters, son in law, Bill Carlson and sister in law Margaret Warren.
The family requests memorial to Grant Park Christian Church or Runnells Christian Church.
