Socorro Melendez Medina, 87, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Fleur Heights Care Center.

Socorro was born May 12, 1927 in Mexico City, Mexico to Juan Melendez and Guadalupe Quintanar Melendez. She moved to the United States at the age of 23 and lived in Des Moines for over 60 years. Socorro spent the majority of her life as a homemaker raising her children and grandchildren while taking care of many others.

Her favorite times were spent surrounded by her family and visiting her home country of Mexico. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and watching her Spanish soaps. Socorro’s selfless character was portrayed through giving to various missionaries, volunteering at church and in the Latino community, and her willingness to help anyone in need. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Socorro is survived by her daughters, Gloria Cano and Lourdez “Lou” (Armando) Rincon; grandchildren, Melissa (Hector), Tony, Ulysses and Julius; great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Joseph, Anthony and Ellena; nephew, John Garrido and a host of extended family and loving friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred “Al” Medina.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Avenue, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with the Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
