David Bennett, 74, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015. He was born May 15, 1940 to Carl and Burdella (Rasmusson) Bennett in Ames, Iowa.
David was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He loved being a Physical Education Teacher at Weeks Middle School. David had a love for sports especially basketball and track. David was an extra special teacher, coach, mentor, son, brother and friend. His generosity for those whose lives he touched had no boundaries.
He is survived by his brother, Blaine (Jan) Bennett; niece, Michelle Bennett; nephew, Jason Anderson; special friends, David Griffith, John King and Jenna Bieri; many cousins; and extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with memorial service to begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2015 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Burial will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in memory of David.

Mr. Bennett was a good man and he will be missed but I believe I'm a better man for having known him. He expected, hard work, "mental toughness," and accountability from those of us who ran track and cross country for him. All of those who ran for him, and listened, learned these valuable life lessons (and more). I will always carry with me very fond memories of Mr. B and I thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to have known him.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Bennett. He was one of my favorite teachers at Weeks, and shared his love of basketball with me and the dread of the gymnastics section of P.E. Tall people are not meant to do somersaults! As I moved on to Lincoln and joined the basketball team, I know that the skills he taught me helped me make the team. He always encouraged me to do my best even though I was mostly sitting on the bench. I knew he was always there cheering me on. He is now the bright star shining in the sky.

I put him through alot durin 6th -8th grade but a good guy,meet him yrs later and even told him I was sorry,he just laughed and said it was ok,

I still talk about Coach Bennett making us run "hill loops" over at Mac Rae Park. I never met anyone who loved to run as much as him.He was my basketball and track coach at Lincoln and helped push me to achieve things I wouldn't have without him. Coach rest in peace. You will be missed

Blaine and Janet so sorry to
hear of your loss, but now he is not suffering anymore. He is in God's Hands. David was a wonderful person. Blaine I know you will miss him, but now he is with your Mom and Dad.

Coach, After 44 yrs of being freinds, I can't beleive it has come to the end. You will ALWAYS be in my heart and mind. When and if I ever get up there, I expect you to have that heaven BB team ready to go. Love ya

Our sincere sympathy to Mr. B's family. We will deeply miss our friend. We have so many special memories that we can save in our hearts. He was such a great guy! He gave to others before he considered himself, and that is a rare quality in a person. He was generous, kind, motivating, very intelligent, and a good role model for all ages. I'm very sorry to hear that Coach passed. He was my coach from 6th thru 9th grade at Weeks and Lincoln. He always encouraged and supported me and pushed me to be better! 30 years ago and I remember him and the memories like they were yesterday! He really cared for kids... Won't ever forget coach Bennett!

I am sorry to hear that Coach Bennett has passed. He was a good role model for us growing up and was my coach from 7th -12th grade at Weeks and Lincoln.
