Joe Dean Whisler, 81, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Joe was born August 20, 1933 in Centerville, Iowa to Ray and Lucille Whisler. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and in the Army Reserves for an additional six years. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years at the Bloomfield Township Fire Department. Joe enjoyed fishing, camping, stock car races and having lunch with his Southridge Hy-Vee family on a daily basis. Most important to Joe was his family and he will be greatly missed.

Joe is survived by his children, Connie (Charlie) Stevens, Renee Jayne, Brian (Heather) Whisler and Tracy Whisler; siblings, Jack (Lucene) Whisler and Linda Duley; grandchildren, Heather, Heidi, Jacob, Sage, Levi, Nathan, Brandon, Brady, Dakota, Cameron and Malia; eight great-grandchildren; and many other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Doris Whisler.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2015 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with a Time of Sharing to begin at 6:30 p.m. Joe will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with his wife Doris.
