Opal Virginia Jones, 92, passed away March 14, 2015 after an on again off again illness for the last two years. She was born November 18, 1922 to Al and Gertrude Nittler. She married Gerald (Jay) Jones March 17, 1938. They were married 49 years before Jay passed away on August 19, 1987. To that union, three children were born – Judy, Gerald Jr. (Bugs) and Shirley.

Opal was a homemaker most of her life and always lived in the Des Moines area. She treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren. When she and Jay were younger, they spent a lot of time camping and fishing. She also loved going to Prairie Meadows. She loved going for car rides to the ice cream shop. She always requested to “make it a big one!” Her personality was one of a kind. Everyone enjoyed her forward wittiness. She always put a smile on your face.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters and son Gerald Jr. (Bugs). Those left to honor her memory are her daughters Judy (Chuck) Hall and Shirley Burns; grandchildren, Roger, Mike (Debbie), Chris (Theresa), Dick (Peggy), Tammy (Jeff), Neal and Karylee; great-grandchildren, Russ (Nicole), Lacy, Brandon, Josh, Jenna, JayLee, Kate (Anthony), Jennifer, Tony and Tiffany; and great-great-grandchildren, Earl, Kelsey, Rilynn, Ryder, Cody, Stephanie, Breanna and LeAnna.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and thanks to the caring staff at Parkridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill, Iowa for the excellent care that Opal received while she lived there.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday March 18, 2015 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St, Des Moines, with visitation for one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
