Francis “Frank” J. Shaffer
Des Moines
Francis “Frank” J. Shaffer was born January 13, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Aaron Francis and Blanche Leona (Overmier) Shaffer. He was an East High graduate, class of 1940. He honorably served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. After returning home from war he married the love of his life, Lois McMains. He took pride in working for Cownie Furs, Solar Air Craft and then retiring from American District Telegraph Company (ADT).
Frank passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at University Park Nursing and Rehab at the age of 93. He is survived by his many nieces and nephews; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Dop (Shaffer).
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois Hazel; and son, Glenn Starr; brothers, Carroll C. Shaffer and Jack T. Shaffer.
Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 13, 2015 at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 233 University, Des Moines. Visitation to follow from 1 to 2 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Burial with military honors will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery following the visitation.
Memorial contributions may be directed toward University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

I remember Uncle Frank and Aunt Lois when I was a young child in Des Moines. I have many fond memories of the Shaffer family gatherings, reunions and like my brother Paul, Sunday evenings playing cards and enjoying Reeds Ice Cream.

I have many fond childhood memories of the Shaffer family getting together at Grans house on Sunday afternoons. My father Carroll and his brothers Jack and Frank, along with their families, had many spirited discussions. The kids played, talked and listened to the adults discuss past events, current times and future plans. Seems like just a few years since those days, but it has been over sixty. We hope the family is again reunited and enjoying their days together. The extended Shaffer family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
