Richard Fleener, 60, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at his home in Des Moines. He was born August 23, 1954 to Clair and Ellyn Fleener. Richard was an accomplished chef and worked for many different restaurants. Cooking was his passion. He was a Chiefs fan and enjoyed fishing, gardening and barbequing. Richard was a warm and friendly person and he never met anyone who didn’t become his friend. He was known to some as “Jerry Garcia” because of his appearance and he was always willing to help a friend in need.
He is survived by his son, Brad; ex-wife, Marcie; brothers, Larry, Wayne and Berry; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has occurred. A memorial gathering is being planned for Saturday. For more information, please call Berry at 515-250-4746.

My prayers are with the family of Richard Fleener. I knew the Fleener family when they lived in Des Moines in my neighborhood. I enjoyed everyone in the family and was a girl pest to a family of four boys. The last time I saw Richard was on New Years' Eve 1984 at Christophers where Richard was the chef that night. How we came about knowing we were both there I don't remember I only know I was so happy to see him again. His obit picture says to me he is the son of Clair and Ellyn. To the three brothers who are still here know that I am so sad about all the family you have lost this year. You all were good folk who my parents and I enjoyed having as neighbors and friends. Take care of yourselves and know that even though we have lost contact over the years the time together as we grew up was important to me. Connie

I remember the day my parents brought Rich home from the hospital. August 23, 1954. He arrived by taxi cab I think, it's been a long time and my memory may not be exact. He was all red and had lots of dark hair and Mom had him all wrapped up in baby blankets even though it was August and hot she wanted to make sure he was warm and well cared for. As he and I grew older we raised a lot of Hell together and lived life to the fullest. As time passed we each managed to survive any serious trouble and each became Men but with different directions to travel. Now he is gone but his memories will always be with me. I will miss him sorely. R.I.P Rich.

Shocked and sorry to read of Rich's passing. He was a good friend and good people. Sadly to say as time moved on we kind of lost track of each other. Your tribute was quite fitting and I couldn't agree more. You have my condolences and God bless.
