Service Details

Joann Hennings Johnson was the 6th child of 9 born to Rita Hyde Mauer and Melvin Herman (Pie) Hennings in Dubuque, Iowa, April 19, 1944. She died peacefully at her home on February 12th of pancreatic cancer. She will be cremated per her wishes and no services are planned. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.

Joann attended Johnston High School and graduated from Cedar Falls High. She retired from the US Post Office after 32 years of service. After retirement, she returned to work as a bookkeeper for Junction Holding.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James of 41 years; her parents; sister, Diane Miller; and two brothers, Wayne and Melvin Hennings. She is survived by her brother, Ronald Henning of Dubuque; sisters, Kayrn Gilpatric of Harlan, Sandra Kingery of Des Moines, Linda (Gary) Noble of Aplington, IA, and Deborah (Steve) Andariese of Flagstaff, AZ; sister-in-law, Jeneene Henning of Dubuque; brother-in-law, Merle Miller of Ida Grove; and two good friends (sisters), Nancy Vasquey and Daisy Hurd.

Joann enjoyed reading, gardening, gambling, and cooking for family and friends and not necessarily in that order. She’d send inordinate amounts of cards to those who were ill to cheer them up. She was the best sister and auntie. Joann had a good soul and ran the race and obstacles placed before her to obtain her victory. We will miss her greatly.

We want to thank those physicians and caregivers at UnityPoint for your genuine care and concern, and the John Stoddard Cancer Center, and UnityPoint Hospice Care.
